In 1975, 16 Mediterranean countries and the European Community adopted the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP). In 2007, the MAP involved in 21 countries bordering the Mediterranean as well as the European Union, all determined to meet the challenges of environmental degradation.
Learning about the environment and environmental activism is not only a matter of saving and protecting the natural environment around us. Using the local environment as a pedagogical tool in youth activities can be a good method to combine intercultural learning with environmental sensitivity. Creating opportunities for young people to encounter the local environment would give participants in youth activities the chance to experience a wider entity, including all the natural, sociological, historical and traditional elements around us.
